No offshore drilling off NC coast

Some excerpts from the Bowles-Burr debate: On offshore drilling

BURR: 'We have to make sure that we don't allow exploration off our coast for wells."

BOWLES: "Richard, again your words don't match your action." -- Bowles, saying that Burr had voted six times against legislation to protect the Outer Banks and prevent offshore drilling

Encourage the development of the tourism industry

I support a permanent ban on oil drilling off the fragile North Carolina coast. I will champion aggressive efforts to clean up the dirty air that is turning tourists away from our mountains. I adamantly oppose the Clear Skies Initiative. It is a retreat from current law and will make it more difficult to clean up pollution. It would allow the TVA and Midwestern utility companies to avoid cleaning up the plants polluting our mountains, turning tourists away and creating respiratory problems for seniors.

Pollution threatens health & economy

Poor air quality is harmful to the health of our citizens and it is a threat to travel and tourism, the top employer in the region. People come to our mountains for the scenery, but if we don't have a Senator who will work to curb the pollution and haze, there will be little left to see. Retirees and young families come to this region to live, yet they will go elsewhere if the health risks of dirty air are not addressed by cleaning it up now.

Reduce emissions & invest in alternative energy

Bowles urged Congress to pass legislation to require Tennessee Valley Authority to reduce emissions from power plants. Bowles said he would work in the Senate to bring the environmental community and business together to agree on legislation to reduce emissions from power plants and smokestack industries. Bowles also said he would support alternative sources of fuel and invest in renewable energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, ethanol and bio diesel.
