State of New Mexico secondary Archives: on Gun Control

Mark Ronchetti: Gun owner and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment

Mark is a gun owner and a strong supporter of the Second Amendment. Hunting, sport shooting, and gun collecting have all long been part of the New Mexico way of life and culture. And, for so many, gun ownership is a key way to protect themselves and their property from harm. As Senator, Mark will always fight to protect our constitutional right to bear arms.

Mark Ronchetti: Opposes a ban of semi-automatic rifles

Q: Do you favor a federal ban on the sale of military style semi-automatic rifles?

A: I completely support the Second Amendment and oppose such a ban. A law-abiding citizen who responsibly handles their guns doesn't need the government to come knocking on their door. I support stronger penalties for criminals who commit crimes with guns in this state.

Gavin Clarkson: Self-defense is a God-given fundamental human right

When the federal government wanted to subdue Indian tribes, the first thing they did was confiscate their guns. I oppose "automatic weapons" bans, "red-flag" laws, and a national gun registry. Self-defense is a God-given fundamental human right. "Shall not be infringed" means exactly that. Due process is another fundamental right.

Ben Ray Lujan: Endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety for gun-sense majority

Everytown for Gun Safety threw its support behind 11 Democratic Senate candidates including Rep. Ben Ray Lujan in New Mexico.

"Everytown is going all-in to flip the Senate and elect leaders who will treat America's gun violence epidemic like the crisis it is," the Everytown President said. The group has targeted a number of key races in the House and Senate, emphasizing the need to protect what it calls a "gun sense majority," which is mostly comprised of Democratic candidates.

Mark Ronchetti: Supports 2nd amendment and background checks

I support the second amendment and oppose bans and gun confiscation. I support background checks for gun purchases and enhancing penalties for criminals who commit crimes with guns. However, law-abiding citizens who responsibly handle their firearms don't need the government to come knocking on their door.

Maggie Toulouse Oliver: Refused to certify proposed petition on new gun control law

Toulouse Oliver also said her campaign will not take money from oil companies, executives or affiliated political action committees. She ruled out taking money from the pharmaceutical industry, too, or from the National Rifle Association or tobacco companies. Ben Ray Lujan has said he will not take money from the NRA, either, or from private prison companies or major oil companies.

Having spent her political career in posts that are relatively administrative, not legislative, Toulouse Oliver has little record on hot-button issues such as health care or gun control. In turn, she is free to define herself for voters. But she already has riled plenty of Republicans with her push to regulate political spending by nonprofit groups and her refusal to certify a proposed petition for a referendum on a new gun control law.

Michelle Lujan-Grisham: Prioritize common-sense reforms

Our Department of Health will conduct a thorough study of gun violence, but right now we will also take action where we know we must. I expect to sign a bill that will ban those convicted of assault from purchasing or possessing a gun, I expect strengthened background checks, and I expect tighter restrictions on safekeeping to ensure children do not have access to guns in the home. With common-sense reforms, we can build a state where people who should not have firearms, don't, simple as that.

Gavin Clarkson: No ban on assault weapons; defend 2nd amendment

Q: Do you favor a federal ban on the sale of assault-style weapons?

A: No. "Assault-style" is a nebulous term. Leftists seem to think it's any gun that looks scary. Americans have every right to own weapons to defend themselves, their families, and their property.

Q: Would you favor a repeal of the 2nd amendment?

A: No. The 2nd Amendment doesn't grant us the right to defend our persons, properties, and families. God did that by making us in His image. 2nd Amendment simply protects what Justice Scalia called a "pre-political right," which is deeply ingrained in natural law. Self-defense is an inalienable right of human nature.

Michelle Lujan-Grisham (D): Yes. Strengthen background checks, ban assault weapons & high-capacity magazines. Ban anyone convicted of domestic violence from buying guns.

Steve Pearce (R): No. "I don't think Gun Control legislation works." Restrictions would divert resources to "cataloguing & confiscating the guns of law-abiding citizens."

Mick Rich: Background checks on all firearm purchases, no exceptions

Q: Given recent events in New Mexico and across the nation, what would you do to address gun violence?

A: Ensure that individuals who should not have access to firearms don't gain gun access, while also ensuring they receive due process. Background checks on all firearm purchases, no exceptions. Any declared "Gun free zones" become responsible for the safety of their occupants.

Mick Rich: Supports 2nd Amendment rights including "assault rifles"

Human beings have the God-given right to protect themselves, their families, and their communities. Americans have the Constitutional right to buy, own, and carry firearms. Our 2nd Amendment rights should allow us undisturbed carry of our firearms no matter which state we live in or travel to. Black guns--often wrongly called "assault rifles"--should have equal legal status as other hunting rifles. And gun owners should be able to protect their hearing by buying silencers.

Steve Pearce: Allow concealed guns across state lines

The National Rifle Association has said momentum is building for bills that enshrine rights to carry concealed weapons across state lines. Pearce is among more than 200 co-sponsors of the House reciprocity bill. A spokesman for Pearce's campaign for state governor said concerns about the bill undermining public safety were unfounded, noting that it defers to existing state laws about where concealed weapons can be carried.
