John Hoeven: Full funding for missiles, bases in North Dakota

Hoeven has worked to prevent the retirement of some Global Hawk missions in defense legislation and is pushing the administration for full funding for them. With nuclear modernization, Hoeven has requested full funding for efforts at Minot Air Force Base, including new engines and upgrades for B-52 aircraft, and the updated missiles they carry. Hoeven has requested funding for new Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent systems, which will replace the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile.

Doug Burgum: State income tax exemption on military retirement pay

We're pleased to see proposed legislation that would grant occupational licensing reciprocity to military spouses. Making North Dakota more military-friendly is key to solving our workforce shortage. Our budget proposes a 100 percent state income tax exemption on military retirement pay to encourage more veterans to stay and work in North Dakota. We should thank our veterans for their service not only with our words--but with our actions--as they certainly have earned it. And let us always remember that since 9-11, we've had North Dakota National Guard members continuously deployed in harm's way, defending our freedoms. I would ask that both our veterans and active duty servicemen and women please stand and be recognized.

Doug Burgum: Need strong deterrent against rogue nations

The Minot Air Force Base, it's not only critical to our local economy in a time where we still have unfortunately global tensions and potentially global nuclear tensions which are again an unthinkable thing that I thought I could maybe quit thinking about from the 60's and 70's when we were kids and doing the drills. It's very important for our country and for all freedom loving people everywhere that we have a strong deterrent when we have rogue nations that are threatening nuclear activity.

Kevin Cramer: Every agency, including defense, should cut programs

In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing defense spending?

A: Yes.

Q: Do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?

A: No.

Q: Do you support reducing Medicaid spending?

A: No.

Q: Do you support reducing Medicare spending?

A: No.

Q: Is balancing the budget a legislative priority?

A: Yes. Balancing the budget with major cuts in discretionary spending and reforming entitlements is a very high priority. Every agency, including Defense, should prioritize spending, cut unnecessary programs and find efficiencies. Income taxes should be flattened to eliminate loopholes and create certainty. Entitlements must be reformed for the long run while ensuring we maintain our commitment to seniors who have spent their lives paying into the system with a specific expectation.

Jack Dalrymple: Our troops safeguard our quality of life

Our efforts in economic development and education are producing a quality of life in North Dakota that is improving every year. But we must work hard to protect and preserve that quality of life against all challenges. At the core of our quality of life is our freedom--freedom to improve our lives and to enjoy our good fortune. We are utterly indebted to the men and women of our National Guard and all of our Armed Forces for the great sacrifices they make every day on our behalf.

Joe Manchin III: Tuition assistance and service bonuses for Desert Storm vets

We must never forget the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. We owe them a debt we can never repay. To that end, I am asking all of you gathered here to help pass the Veterans Benefits bill we have proposed. In that legislation, we will give our veterans and active military from Desert Storm service bonuses and increased funding for tuition assistance. Our veterans deserve nothing less for all you have done for the cause of freedom and to preserve our way of life.
